Impress for GIS 3.0 released with full 64 bit support

December 17th,2010

Hannover / Germany – trinovis with its Impress Solutions Group as the leading provider of packaged integration applications, today announced the introduction of Impress for GIS Release 3.0. Impress for GIS 3.0 has built-in support for ESRI version 10 and fully supports 64 bit JAVA environments running on 64 bit Microsoft operating systems.

Impress for GIS 3.0 enables access to its server-based asset and work management processes from either web-based map deployments or ArcGIS desktop based ESRI environments. Out-of-the-box preconfigured processes of Impress for GIS are for example:

  • Out-of-the-box Web Capabilities:
Extends ESRI web-based maps with SAP-based business processes, including: create work order, create notification, view work order details, view notifications, view asset details, and view CCS details.
  • Represent Work Orders and Notifications as Map Features:
SAP-based work orders and notifications can be placed directly on the map as individual point or polygon features, enabling work activity to be represented at specific locations on the map. By quickly pinpointing work locations, even along linear assets, maintenance organizations can reduce travel time, and more effectively assess maintenance activity.
  • Enhanced Spatial Analysis:
Expanded access to customer and consumption information from SAP’s industry business solution for Utilities (IS-U/CCS), and pinpoint placement of work activity enables more effective spatial analysis. For example, leak detection and analysis of linear assets is facilitated, as is the modeling of a water supply.

In addition to the above, the latest release of Impress for GIS has been enhanced

  • in its ability to configure data mapping and feature class configuration for the data transfer applied between SAP and ESRI,
  • in its ability to publish configured processes as Web Services which can be used/consumed by other SOA based applications,
  • in its ability to support custom frontend applications which make use of configured integrated  processes of Impress for GIS. Coding examples on how to use Impress for GIS Web Services as part of an Adobe FLEX environment are provided.

Another major milestone of Impress for GIS 3.0 is the introduction of 64 bit JAVA support. Previous releases of Impress for GIS were tied to 32 bit JAVA environments which caused certain challenges in high volume data transfer environments. Through the introduction of 64 bit JAVA technology, well known memory restrictions will be removed. In addition to this memory advantage Impress experienced remarkable performance gains in fully 64 bit based infrastructure environments where also the Impress for GIS repository and the ESRI environment utilize 64 bit operating systems and database systems.

Advanced Maintenance Planning Application Module released

December 17th, 2010

Hannover / Germany – trinovis with its Impress Solutions Group as the leading provider of packaged integration applications, today announced the introduction of a new module as part of the recently announced Impress for EPM Release 4.0.

Impress for EPM 4.0 is a pre-configured integration application that enables Microsoft Project or Primavera schedulers to immediately download the latest work orders from SAP right to their scheduling tool. Critical information including operations, planned work, work centers, and work center capacity is transferred so work can be quickly prioritized and scheduled. Updated schedules, confirmations and even new operations are uploaded back to SAP, enabling planners to accurately plan for the next week. When unplanned work arises, schedule breakers can be inserted into the master schedule so that assignments and plans can be quickly adjusted. Impress for EPM is available as a pre-configured integration application to integrate the Primavera or Microsoft Project scheduling systems with SAP PS and with SAP PM. Additional add-on modules are available to support certain specific scheduling needs around material management, resource handling and the handling of actuals in SAP and the corresponding scheduling systems. As part of Impress for EPM 4.0, a new module around advanced maintenance planning support will be released.

By default, Impress for EPM synchronizes work orders in SAP with tasks or activities in the corresponding scheduling systems. This approach is currently being used within the Impress global user community to optimize planning and scheduling tasks in routine maintenance or shutdown / turnaround projects. In addition to the above, the new Advanced Maintenance Planning Application Module, available with Impress for EPM 4.0, supports the download of information from maintenance plans and related task lists from SAP into Microsoft Project Server or Primavera scheduling systems.

The additional information coming from maintenance plans in SAP reflects future maintenance work which is not yet identified  in work orders and therefore allows a more accurate forecast of upcoming work and related resource needs. This new application module dramatically improves the user’s ability to forecast work in future months, quarters or even years by making use of the powerful analyzing capabilities of Enterprise Project Management systems while Impress for EPM provides the necessary data from SAP as the master data for these analysis tasks. Once the Impress for EPM scheduling module is configured, this additional module can easily be activated. It makes use of the already existing configuration for the data mapping between SAP and scheduling systems and applies  it to the objects coming from Maintenance Plans in SAP.

The Advanced Maintenance Planning Application module is available to interface SAP ECC 6.0 with Microsoft Project Server 2007, MSP Server 2010 as well as Primavera Version 6 and higher.

Auckland Regional Council and Auckland Regional Transport Authority Select Impress

Impress for GIS to Integrate SAP and ESRI January 7, 2008

Waltham, MA – Impress Software, a leading provider of packaged integration applications, today announced that it has been selected by the Auckland Regional Council (ARC) and the Auckland Regional Transport Authority (ARTA) in New Zealand to integrate their SAP and ESRI systems. The ARC and ARTA will implement Impress for GIS, a solution that ensures consistency of asset information between SAP and ESRI and streamlines asset management processes that span both systems.

The ARC is responsible for protecting and sustaining the region’s air, soil and water resources, and ARTA is responsible for managing the growing demands on its transport systems. The ARC and ARTA manage a significant portfolio of assets, including approximately 40,000 hectares of regional parkland, 40 railway stations, rail carriages, 14 ferry wharves, and Mt. Smart Stadium.

Recently, the ARC completed an advanced asset management plan for its regional parks in accordance with the Local Government Act 2002. One of the plan’s top priorities was to improve the current asset management system. The Auckland Regional Council concluded that a solution that would seamlessly integrate SAP PM with their ESRI geographical information system would significantly improve workforce productivity, decision-making and compliance.

“With our asset management strategy centered on SAP and GIS, it was important for the ARC and ARTA to find a way to fully leverage both systems in a timely and cost-effective manner,” said John Holley, Group Manager Information Services from the ARC. “Impress for GIS, as a certified, fully supported and upgradeable solution, gives us confidence that we will complete the integration on time and budget, and peace of mind that our investment will be protected as we face future upgrades to SAP or ESRI.”

The ARC and ARTA expect that Impress for GIS will enable employees to work more effectively in their most familiar environments. The integrated solution will also provide management with accurate and current asset information to facilitate effective decision-making for long-term financial planning and risk management.

“The Auckland Regional Council has embarked on a strategic charter to meet the region’s present and future needs,” explains Warren Utt, CEO, Impress Software. “We’re pleased that Impress was selected to help the ARC simplify and unify its asset management approach, and believe that more and more government agencies will follow the ARC’s lead as a way to more effectively manage resources and prepare for future growth.”

Czech Refining Company Live With Impress for EPM; Ready for Major Shutdown

August 20, 2007

Waltham, Ma. – Impress Software, a leading provider of packaged integration applications, today announced the completion of the Impress for EPM implementation at the Czech Refining Company (CRC). Impress for EPM will serve as the bridge between SAP?s Plant Maintenance (PM) and Project Systems (PS) modules and Primavera P3e for shutdown and routine maintenance initiatives.

CRC is the largest crude oil processing company and the largest producer of refined petroleum products in the Czech Republic. Established in 1995, CRC operates as a joint venture with Unipetrol, ENI, ConocoPhillips, and Shell. Two years ago, the Company embarked on an initiative to improve operating performance and maintenance practices at its two refineries. After a thorough analysis of requirements, the Company embraced Shell’s Global Asset Management Excellence (GAME) initiative. The GAME program was created by Shell to enhance asset integrity and plant availability, and aligned closely with CRC’s goals and expertise. The program leverages a standard set of best practices that provide a more efficient approach to the execution of critical work process using SAP, Primavera and Impress for EPM.

“We used both SAP and Primavera in the past, but not to the extent prescribed by Shell’s GAME initiative, and not in the integrated fashion that Impress for EPM enables,” said Tomas Palma, Best-in-Class Project Manager for CRC. “The fact that Impress for EPM is a certified SAP partner, in conjunction with their participation in Shell’s GAME made our choice for an integration solution very easy.”

CRC is facing its biggest plant shutdown in Company history. The shutdown is expected to consume 39 days, tens of millions of dollars, and more than a 1000-person workforce comprised of both CRC employees and contractors. SAP PM and PS will be used for costing and planning purposes, while Primavera will be used to optimally schedule and manage the initiative. Impress for EPM will keep critical project data consistent between systems enabling more effective planning and scheduling, contractor management, and cost tracking and analysis. In addition, Impress for EPM will help CRC establish a best-practice template in SAP to facilitate the planning of future shutdowns.

“Impress for EPM is relied on by the world’s largest refineries to ensure that SAP and Primavera or Microsoft are in synchronization at all times during major and routine maintenance initiatives,” explains Warren Utt, Impress Software’s CEO. “We continually enhance the Impress for EPM product with best practices and repeatable business processes so that our customers not only realize the lowest total cost of ownership for the integration, but also reach operational excellence through improved workforce productivity and decision-making.”

Aquarion Water Company Selects Impress for GIS to Integrate ESRI and SAP

September 11, 2006

Waltham, MA – Impress Software, a leading provider of packaged integration applications for SAP Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) and Enterprise Project Management (EPM) customers, today announced that it has been selected by Aquarion Water Company to integrate its SAP and ESRI systems. Aquarion will implement Impress Software’s Impress for GIS, a solution that enables businesses to relate asset information between SAP and ESRI and streamline business processes that span both systems.

Founded in 1857 and headquartered in Bridgeport, Connecticut, Aquarion Water Company is one of the ten largest investor-owned water utilities in the U.S., serving more than 219,400 homes and businesses, or approximately 677,000 people, in 53 surrounding communities. As part of a company-wide transformation spearheaded by its executive team, Aquarion looked to increase the sharing of information across the organization. After an extensive competitive review, Aquarion chose SAP as its master system of record and recognized the need for a tight integration with ESRI ArcGIS.

“As a utility, our mapping system is an important part of our business, and with most of our data being stored in SAP, we needed to find a robust and proven integration solution,” said Howard J. Dunn, Vice President of Operations and Technology, Aquarion Water Company. “After evaluating alternatives, we determined that Impress for GIS was the right solution to enable the seamless integration. We expect to recoup our investment in about one year by dramatically lowering operation costs, decreasing service times and increasing overall efficiency.”

Aquarion plans to implement both Impress for GIS modules — Asset Data Management (ADM) and Maintenance and Operations. The ADM module, which relates asset information between systems and continually synchronizes changes, will provide Aquarion with the data accuracy it needs to ensure financial compliance and operational efficiency. To improve productivity of its customer service operation, Aquarion will also implement the Maintenance and Operations module to enable geospatial analysis of work order and asset data and provide access to SAP processes from ESRI’s ArcGIS.

Waltham, MA – Impress Software, a leading provider of packaged integration applications for SAP Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) and Enterprise Project Management (EPM) customers, today announced that Bombardier Aerospace has selected Impress to integrate Microsoft Project and SAP to manage maintenance scheduling and visibility across its Aircraft Services centers.

Bombardier Aerospace is a world leader in the design and manufacture of innovative aviation products and services for the business, regional and amphibious aircraft markets. This legacy of innovation consolidates more than 250 years of aviation history and has developed 18 successful new aircraft since 1989. Aircraft Services is the aircraft maintenance organization within Bombardier Aerospace.

“As part of Bombardier’s Continuous Business Improvement (CBI) initiative, it was clear that capacity and production planning was an area that required enhancing to improve customer satisfaction and revenue opportunities,” said Troy Jonas, Vice President and General Manager, Aircraft Services. “To ensure the success of this re-engineered business concept, improved visibility and scheduling are crucial – and the integration that Impress enables between Microsoft Project and SAP is central in giving us the necessary insight.”

Bombardier Aircraft Services Customer Service Representatives will use Microsoft Project to create the recommended service project plan. Once the Aircraft Services customer has authorized work, the Impress solution will synchronize the Microsoft Project Service Plan and automatically generate SAP Work Orders. Microsoft Project will then be used on the shop floor to record actual work performed, and Completed Work Orders will then trigger customer invoices. This process will enable Schedulers and Customer Service personnel to work with a user-friendly interface, eliminate redundant data entry and to also perform what-if analysis resulting in improved capacity utilization.

“Aircraft Maintenance is inherently complex and requires extensive, error-free record keeping. Impress dramatically reduces redundant data entry and ensures accuracy. Framatome ANP Selects Impress Software to Integrate SAP and Primavera

February 27, 2006

WALTHAM, Ma. – Impress Software, a leading provider of packaged integration applications for SAP Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) and Enterprise Project Management (EPM) customers, today announced that it has been selected by Framatome ANP, Inc. to integrate its SAP and Primavera systems in order to give controllers and schedulers more accurate data and timely visibility.

Framatome ANP, a joint subsidiary of AREVA and Siemens, is the world leader in the design, construction, modernization and maintenance of nuclear power plants and research reactors, and relies heavily on Primavera’s P3e project management system to schedule, coordinate and execute its operations. In the past, Framatome ANP used software from JD Edwards (JDE) to monitor and control financial aspects of its operations. The software was loosely linked with Primavera through custom integration that only allowed data to flow in one direction. Framatome ANP has chosen to migrate from JDE to a system from SAP with a more complex project setup structure that will require a greater level of synchronization.

“I started to see challenges with integrating Primavera and SAP around 1999, when a lot of people were struggling to get their systems to work together and weren?t doing a very good job of it,” said George Broman, Principal Project Manager for SAP at Framatome ANP. “After leaving the industry for a few years, I came back and learned about Impress. The fact that Impress is endorsed by both SAP and Primavera is invaluable and solves a lot of problems.”

By using packaged integration applications, Framatome ANP does not have to burden IT resources that are often spread thin. Instead of allocating resources to deal with time-consuming manual data entry or custom coding, technology will handle the challenge. Framatome ANP estimates that due to the man-hours saved as a result of the new combined solution from SAP and Impress, it will recoup its investment in approximately 5 months. In addition, by working with Impress, Framatome ANP has someplace to turn to with questions or if problems arise.

“What we’ve done is productize the integration of common processes between two systems ? in this case, SAP and Primavera ? which leaves very little custom work or trial-and-error for customers like Framatome ANP,” said Warren Utt, CEO of Impress Software. “There are many companies out there that are in the same boat. We help them get the most value from their investments in enterprise applications, while allowing them to avoid unnecessary integration risks.”

Using a packaged integration application from Impress Software, Framatome ANP will benefit from:

  • Better data integrity – No reconciliation steps between systems or  dual data entry paths are required;
  • Higher productivity – Reduced manual data entry and manpower required to update two systems means decreased handling costs;
  • Lower support costs – Standard process configuration ensures the same data moves between SAP and P3e;
  • A long term, reliable solution – A proven technology via partnerships with SAP and Primavera, in place of custom integration; and
  • Dynamic synchronization to maximize SAP’s functionality – Users have higher confidence to make decisions based on the system?s information. Accurate delivery of consistent data leads to quality improvement in project execution, monitoring and control.

These new advancements in Framatome ANP’s infrastructure, and the benefits they will provide, ideally position the company to take advantage of future market opportunities. “Overall energy prices and environmental concerns such as carbon dioxide emissions are driving a renewed interest in nuclear power,” Broman added. “We’re likely to see new construction in the near-future, and Framatome ANP will need an efficient platform to operate on when this happens. A key part of that platform is integration.”About Impress SoftwareImpress Software is a leading provider of packaged integration applications that enable quick and cost-effective integration of project management and geographical information systems with SAP, resulting in streamlined business processes across multiple enterprise systems. Integrating EAM Systems is a Major Challenge, According to Industry Execs

January 3, 2006

Survey from Impress Software Reports That Half of All Enterprise Asset Management Projects are Completed Late or Over Budget; 68% Concerned about Use of Multiple Systems to Manage Projects

Waltham Ma. – Integration between two Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) systems is a major challenge that hinders organizations from achieving optimal value from their investments, according to a recent survey conducted by Impress Software. More than 70% of executive respondents claim top business challenges of EAM projects to be financial control, timely visibility into project costs and status, and accuracy of project information – largely driven by the use of multiple information systems.

“The recent survey shows that when executing large projects like construction, plant turnaround, or plant shutdown, information sharing between departments is the key to success,” said Warren Utt, president and chief executive officer of Impress Software. “In order for projects to stay on-time and on-budget, project managers and finance executives must be able to share accurate and timely data. With a high volume of projects taking place at many organizations, fully automating the links between systems is the only way to make sure that happens.”

EAM Projects Are Constantly in Progress
The survey found that EAM projects are constantly in progress, with the most commonly executed activities relating to routine maintenance work (82%), followed by turnaround/shutdown/outage projects (74%) and construction of new facilities (58%). It?s important to note that most organizations execute more than one type of EAM project. In fact, nearly half of the respondents reported completing more than 250 routine maintenance projects per year, and more than half of the respondents complete between 1-10 turnarounds/shutdowns/outage projects each year.

Companies Are Not Integrating EAM Systems Effectively
With more than 80 % of organizations using more than one system to accomplish EAM projects, the integration challenge is wide-spread. Nearly half of the respondents that use multiple systems reported that they either employ a manual process to transfer data between systems, or that their systems share absolutely no data at all.

EAM Projects: Over-budget and Overdue
With the large volume of EAM projects taking place, and with the majority of organizations executing these projects without automated links between their systems, the survey found that 55 % of projects are completed past deadline, and 50 % are completed over budget. Additionally, of those projects that are over-budget, more than 20% are over budget by more than 50%.

About the 2005 EAM Survey
The survey was completed by 92 EAM executives at industry conferences and through online polling to provide their peers with a better understanding of current practices and industry-wide challenges. Executive respondents held responsibilities for business units, single plants or entire companies from a wide range of industries including chemical, energy, utility, engineering & construction, oil & gas, public sector, aerospace & defense and forestry & land management.

Miner & Miner's ArcFM and SAP Integration Streamlined with Impress's Geo I.App

July 27, 2005

Fort Collins, Colo. and Waltham, Ma. – Impress Software, working with Miner & Miner, a Telvent company, has developed Geo I.App, a packaged integration application which links Miner & Miner’s ArcFM software to SAP.  This application will eliminate redundant data entry by providing all the essential functionality to manage assets and maintenance activities directly from the GIS through a live integration with SAP.  The initial integration will be featured at the ESRI Users Conference in San Diego, CA, July 24 through 31, 2005.

Geo I.App is specifically designed for SAP and ESRI ArcGIS/ArcFM users and allows for the synchronization of spatial objects in both the SAP’s PLM and EAM modules and GIS environment.  The application leverages ESRI:s ArcGIS Server architecture and ensures that geographical data, functional locations, and equipment, are consistent across the enterprise, and eliminates the risk of discrepancies in location and resources.

“The integration of enterprise resource planning (ERP) back office systems with spatial technology has long been a goal of many utilities.  But a number of variables have made integration difficult to achieve and expensive to maintain.  The work by Impress to bring together ArcFM and SAP offers utilities and other enterprises a great head start towards an affordable and sustainable solution,” said Jeff Meyers, president of Miner & Miner.

“We’re pleased to be working with Miner & Miner to deliver a best of breed packaged integration application for the utilities market,” said Warren Utt, Impress CEO. “By bridging ArcFM and SAP, Geo I.App enables organizations to more efficiently manage geographically distributed assets and maintenance activities.”

Miner & Miner (M&M), a Telvent company, is a world leader in the development and implementation of GIS software for utilities. M&M’s ArcFM Solution and its extended services assist electric, gas, water, and wastewater utilities in increasing productivity, lowering costs, and improving services by allowing them to effectively manage spatial information. Founded in 1946 as a full-service electrical engineering firm, M&M has been a business partner of ESRI since 1987. This partnership has enabled M&M to become the world’s leading developer of ArcGIS applications for the utility industry. M&M services include implementation and customization of software to fit the needs of individual utilities. For more information, please visit www.miner.com .

Impress Software raises $8 Million and appoints Warren Utt Chief Executive Officer

November 15, 2004

Waltham, Ma. – Impress Software, a leading provider of packaged enterprise integration applications for SAP customers, today announced that it has closed $8.0 Million in Series B funding.  The latest round was led by General Catalyst Partners, and included participation from existing investors Carmel Ventures and Techno Venture Management (TVM).  David Orfao, managing director at General Catalyst Partners, has been appointed Chairman of the Company’s board of directors, with Avi Zeevi, general partner and founder of Carmel Ventures, and Friedrich Bornikoel, managing partner of TVM, also joining the Company’s board.

In addition to the funding, the Company also announced today that it has appointed Warren Utt as its CEO. The Company has also incorporated as a US-based corporation, and has officially moved its corporate headquarters from Hannover, Germany to Waltham, Mass. in the United States. The latest funding will be used to expand Impress Software’s US operations and develop additional Impress Software packaged integration applications, called I.Apps(TM), to further enable quick and cost-effective deployment of business processes across multiple enterprise systems.

Enterprises today still find themselves with the challenge of maximizing their existing technology investments to stay competitive while simultaneously needing to justify the total cost of ownership for each new initiative they embark on. Integrating key enterprise systems remains the answer for companies seeking to standardize business processes and gain operational efficiencies. However, the existing solution to this problem includes rigidly integrating applications through custom-built interfaces that ultimately prevent IT from being able to change quickly for competitive advantage.

“Countless companies spent millions of dollars cobbling together their key systems through custom interfaces and now are painfully realizing their costly integration work has made it prohibitive to upgrade their systems. Our unique ‘packaged application’ approach to solving this problem helps companies leverage industry best practices and standardize their key business processes across disparate systems using prebuilt, easily-upgradeable integration applications,” said Warren Utt, IMPRESS SOFTWARE’s new CEO. “This approach is clearly emerging as a natural solution to these challenges that also minimizes total cost of ownership, and I’m looking forward to helping IMPRESS SOFTWARE capitalize on the opportunity to solve this crucial business problem with our customers.”

With more than 24 years of industry experience, Warren is recognized as an innovative senior executive with a track record for successfully identifying and capitalizing on emerging market opportunities and building programs to capture global and national accounts within the public and private sectors. Most recently, Warren held the role of Senior Vice President of the Worldwide Field Organization for Broadvision in Redwood City, California. Prior to Broadvision, he held the position of CEO and President of Contentra, where he led the Company from its founding to its acquisition by North American Media Engines. Warren also served as CEO of Continuum Software, where he successfully led two rounds of financing and redirected the company’s strategy. Earlier in his career he held key sales, marketing and alliance management positions with Deloitte Consulting, EDS, Interleaf, InterOPS and Wang.

“Warren brings to Impress Software the unique combination of extensive experience in the packaged application marketplace with a deep knowledge and understanding of the SAP ecosystem. With the Company relocating its headquarters to the United States, I look forward to working closely with Warren and the strong Impress Software team to further deliver on its vision of reducing many of the barriers associated with effectively and efficiently running SAP with other business critical enterprise systems, regardless of vendor,” said David Orfao. “Major organizations, including Bayer, Dupont and Halliburton already are benefiting from Impress Software’s packaged software approach to integrating disparate enterprise systems with SAP – helping these organizations standardize business processes and ensure data integrity across the extended enterprise in a matter of days, not the typical months and years. Impress Software’s established traction and success in the marketplace makes this a very attractive investment opportunity.”

Certified by SAP, Impress I.Apps help companies to integrate specific third party software products, such as project management and GIS systems, into the SAP ecosystem in a manner that is quick to implement, cost-effective, leverages industry best practices and that is upgradeable for future versions of SAP and the connected systems. Existing I.App’s include:

Project I.App(TM), a pre-packaged, out-of-the-box Integration Application that links SAP(R) with major project scheduling and management products, such as Primavera and Microsoft Project. Project I.App integrates the business processes of project and maintenance planning and enterprise resource planning (ERP) that would otherwise run independently of each other. Ensuring data is consistent across all systems at all times, Project I.App eliminates the need for duplicate data entry and the risk of mismatched schedules and resources.

Geo I.App(TM) is a pre-packaged application for synchronization of location-related data between SAP and ESRI’s ArcGIS. The application provides all the functionality needed to easily establish, manage, and monitor the data synchronization process. Ensuring geographical data is consistent across all systems at all times, Geo I.App eliminates the need for duplicate data entry and the risk of mismatched locations and resources.
